Nadia Singhii, age 16, 1:00p.m., November 17, 2001

Yesterday at school somebody told me to go away or else they would call homeland security on me. Ever since the attack on the Twin Towers everyone has treated me harshly and very mean. I felt subjected to racism for the first time yesterday and it hurt me very bad. I was born in America and am not part of any terrorist groups by any means, but because I am Muslim people assume I am part of Al Qaeda. The fact that I am treated as if I was the suicide bombers hurts my feelings because I and others are not like those people who bombed the towers; I am American and am proud to be one. According to an article I read it stated, “These cartoons reinforce myths that Muslims have been trying hard to dispel. Today, if you ask a five year old child to draw a picture of a terrorist, they would more likely than not draw someone with a beard and turban – someone who looked like a Muslim or an Asian. The media frenzy endangers the solidarity many Muslims have built up with other groups since 9/11, Anas added: We yearn to stand together, but many Muslims no longer know where to stand. They feel they are being targeted by the police, the media, and by foreign and domestic policy” (Choonara). May God change the view of Americans.
